Founded in 2016, the Baishan Montessori Teacher Education Institute is dedicated to the preparation of caring and qualified Montessori teachers at the early childhood level. We are committed to the highest standards for teacher education.

Our faculty are educators with many years of classroom experience, both within China and abroad. We are familiar with the unique challenges of bringing authentic Montessori to communities in China. Our years of experience working with dual-language Montessori environments make us uniquely qualified to prepare Chinese Montessori teachers.


The Baishan Montessori Teacher Education Institute (BMTEI) provides a Montessori teacher education program for the Early Childhood (birth – 6 years of age) level.

The purpose of BMTEI is to create, establish and provide an independent non-profit educational resource for the advancement of education and for scientific purposes; to improve ways of assisting children in their learning; and to explore where development can be demonstrated and implemented.

BMTEI faculty have extensive experience working with adult learners in China. Most of the faculty are full time residents of China, or Chinese nationals. Our faculty are bilingual and English-speaking staff.

Other important aspects of the program include our emphasis on action research projects that allow our adult learners to apply their knowledge of Montessori philosophy and effective classroom practices to real life situations.

The majority of our students are expected to work in self-directed internships. We have, therefore, created a strong field visit support protocol. In addition to regular contact at seminars held during the internship year, social media is used to provide support as necessary.

Adult learners are expected to:

  1. Demonstrate theoretical knowledge and practical ability to prepare a developmentally appropriate environment for children ages birth to 6 years.
  2. Demonstrate competence in designing materials based on the interests of children.
  3. Develop the skills required to work with children from culturally diverse backgrounds, respecting individual differences and personal choice.
  4. Develop an awareness of the need to become a life-long learner and reflective practitioner.
  5. Develop the skills to work collaboratively with co-workers, children, parents and administrators.
  6. Demonstrate flexibility in their approach to working with young children, incorporating practices derived from current research in early childhood education.


BMTEI aims to fully prepare adult learners to become deeply knowledgeable, caring practitioners of Montessori philosophy and methodology for children ages birth-6, in order to promote the development of Montessori education in China; ignite a lifelong love of learning in the young generations; and nurture responsible global citizens who will promote a harmonious and peaceful world.
